Wall Street Journal:
Under scrutiny for handing over data about its users to the U.S. government, Facebook late on Friday for the first time disclosed that it got between 9,000 and 10,000 requests from all government entities in the U.S. in the second half of 2012. That number includes all requests — from local, state and federal authorities as well as classified national security-related requests.
Facebook general council Ted Ullyot said those requests sought data about somewhere between 18,000 and 19,000 individual Facebook accounts.
“We hope this helps put into perspective the numbers involved, and lays to rest some of the hyperbolic and false assertions in some recent press accounts about the frequency and scope of the data requests that we receive,” Ullyot said in a statement.
