Americans for Prosperity statement on West Bank proposals

WICHITA, KAN. – The Kansas chapter of Americans for Prosperity issued the following statement following today’s vote in the Wichita City Council:

“We have pleaded with city council members to be vigilant with the tax dollars entrusted to them by the public,” said AFP-Kansas field director Susan Estes. “Despite these concerns from the public, the city council made a 4-2 decision to sell the West Bank property for the River Vista development project.

“The same developer who sold the Watkins property to the city for $8.50 per square foot is now one of the developers who gets to buy more land from the city for only 47 cents per square foot.

“Wichitans are being poorly served by members of the city council who were willing to sell this prime real estate on the Arkansas River for a fraction of the land’s estimated value.

“Unfortunately, we don’t even know by how much taxpayers were shortchanged, given the wildly different appraisals from both proposals for this project, and the fact that the city has failed to obtain an independent appraisal of the property.

“Taxpayers were the losers after today’s vote.”
